Having a whānau member with sleep apnoea can effect the whole whānau.
People with sleep apnoea may:
- Snore
- Feel tired during the day
Snoring can be loud and can wake up the whole whānau.
Having a hapū Māmā who is tired can affect other tamariki and whānau
Sleep apnoea can also increase the chance that the hapū Māmā may develop preeclampsia, which is a serious medical complication of pregnancy.
Preeclampsia can lead to:
- Extra clinic visits during and after pregnancy
- Extra hospital stays during and after pregnancy
- Longer hospital stays
- Seizures (fits) and other serious medical problems
If your whānau member joins this study, it will involve:
- Completing a 5-10 minute survey about sleep
- Allowing the study team to review medical records so we know whether she got preeclampsia and to see the baby’s weight at birth
If the survey shows she might have a sleep problem, the study team will call, text, and/or email to discuss whether she is willing to do an overnight sleep test at home. This device does not need to be plugged in and sharing a bed is ok.
